Time to sign up for this year's Welton Soapbox Derby

The summer of 2016 will see the return of The Welton Soapbox Derby '“ and now is the time to apply for a place.

Travelling at up to speeds of 30mph and beyond, local and national teams converge in Welton to race their homemade gravity powered racing dream machines down a 500m race track.

There will be a maximum of 40 individually constructed racing carts taking place in the races.

Places on the starting grid are filling up, but there is still time to request an application and secure a place if you wish to take part.

Drivers can be aged from eight years and upwards across three age categories: eight to 11years, 12 to 15years, and 16+ years. Entry is £10 per driver, and you can have multiple drivers of the same cart.

Carts can be built as a single seater or with co-pilot.

In the past a sofa, a bath and toilet, a Reliant Robin look-a-like, and a Postman Pat van have all taken on the course.

This year’ entries already include The Bin Mobile, Acceleramus, Mario Kart Keable, Take III, The Beast, and Herbie.

Watching the races, which take place on Saturday July 9, is free. There will be programmes available to buy which have a unique number to give you entry into the grand raffle.

Pre-race checks start at noon, and the first race will be at 1pm.

There will be lots of food and beverage outlets; including local ciders from the village’s own Vale of Welton Cider Company; and local real ales and more served from The White Horse pub.

Also there will be stalls and children’s activities.
